1888 General Trumelet-Faber (1852-1916) Indo-French China. Volume 1 An-Nam, Tong-King, the wilderness of the left bank of the Mekong River. An album of large photographs (43x58 cm) in a half leather binding, numbered 1. Illustrated, located for all 137 glued photographic prints, in 12x18 cm formats. Nice general condition, a few freckles and small lacks and rubbing on the binding. Printed captions. First part. Annam : Province of Quang-Nam, Hué and its Citadel, Tombs of the emperors of Annam. All the images tell the story of his career as a soldier, a man very attached to the Annamite civilization and an explorer of little explored territories. Hundreds of kilometres travelled to meet cultures and populations, often ignored or despised by Europeans. All the pictures were taken during the period 1888-1891 by Captain Trumelet-Faber, assigned in 1888 to a battalion of Annamite Riflemen in Hué. In 1890, he was detached to Hanoi and appointed battalion commander. It was in this context that Auguste Pavie asked him to carry out a number of missions. He returned from Indochina with several albums of photographs, dating from 1888 to 1891. On his return to France, he became a brigadier general, was posted to Tunisia and Algeria and died during the First World War. Album offered and dedicated in 1892 by Commander Trumelet-Faber to Sadi Carnot (1837-1894), Fifth President of the French Republic from 1887 to 1894. "To Monsieur Carnot, President of the French Republic. A deeply respectful tribute to the author. Trumelet-Faber, battalion commander of the 55th regiment. Sadi Carnot: A moderate republican, a great promoter of the Franco-Russian Alliance, his term of office was marked by great political unrest, linked to the Panama Scandal, the emergence of General Boulanger's populism and anarchist attacks. It was in this context that Sadi Carnot was assassinated by the young Italian anarchist Sante Geronimo Caseri
