BLACK CAT (The). Organ of the Interests of Montmartre. Paris, 1882-1894. From the first year n°1 (January 14, 1882) to the 13th year n°675 (1894). 675 numbers including n°20 bis, n°328 bis, the supplements to n°329, 414, 609, 610, 612, 613, 614, 615 (missing n°662 and 668) gathered in 13 volumes in folio, salmon canvas cardboard, smooth spines, year labels in brown mar. (qqs dirt on the bindings). Numerous illustrations by Steinlen, Willette, Caran d'Ache, Guillaume, Forain, Capy, Gill, Robida, Rivière, Radiguet, Uzes, Heidbrinck, Roedel, &c. and texts by Verlaine, Mallarmé, Léon Bloy, Jean Moréas, Courteline, Zola, V. Hugo, Barbey d'Aurévilly, Richepin, F. Champseur or Guy de Maupassant (who was also the newspaper's administrator), etc. Qqs cuts and tears without missing, some sheets yellowed. Several issues bear Rodolphe Salis's autograph signature in brown ink, in one. The Cabaret du Chat Noir was created in 1881 by Rodolphe Salis who had imagined it "in the purest Louis XIII style... with a wrought iron chandelier from the Byzantine period and where gentlemen, bourgeois and manants would henceforth be invited to drink Victor Hugo's usual absinthe (...) and hypocras in golden cups". The reality was less sumptuous but Salis gradually managed to give a rather Rabelaisian atmosphere to the place and above all to convince the poet Emile Goudeau and his friends from the Hydropathes club to leave the left bank for Montmartre. In defiance of the law, Salis decided to install a piano in his cabaret, thus bringing poets and chansonniers together on stage for the first time and creating the cabaret song. Success was quickly assured and the best clientele in Paris was rushing to the door, guarded by the famous Swiss guard in colourful outfits.
