Irénée Henri PIA dit René PIA (1886-1960) French... - Lot 211 - Lynda Trouvé
Irénée Henri PIA dit René PIA (1886-1960) French School of Travelling Painters of Indochina. Female nude - A Tongan woman. Pencil and ink on paper, signed and autographed lower right: "A Duchaing - Saint Aignan en toute cordialité". Size : 50x32 cm. Irénée Henri Pia is unknown but proposes an interesting itinerary. Graduated from the Ecole des Beaux-arts de Paris, he teaches at the high school, first in Marseille, then in Paris. He is finally seconded to Indochina in 1925 where he is successively teacher of drawing at the Chasseloup-Laubat high school in Saigon, at the Albert Sarraut high school in Hanoi and finally at the Indochina School of Fine Arts. At the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, his students' work was exhibited in the Public Instruction Hall in the Angkor Wat Palace. Six of his drawings are kept at the Quai Branly Museum. These works are an apology of the hard-working character of Tongan women, to the attention of the French who came to visit the 1931 exhibition.
