VALÉRY (Paul). La Jeune Parque. Paris, Gallimard,... - Lot 39 - Lynda Trouvé
VALÉRY (Paul). La Jeune Parque. Paris, Gallimard, 1936. Large in-8 (24 x 18,6 cm). Brown half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed, caissons decorated with a mosaic listel in havana morocco underlined by a gilt fillet, gilt head, cover and spine preserved (H. Alix). Spine faded, small lack at the head cap. Edition commented by ALAIN. N°33 of 50 numbered copies on Montval, with the decorated cover on Chine. Beautiful autograph letter signed by Henri MONDOR to the young bibliophile Jean-François Lemaire: "La Jeune Parque] absolute masterpiece and which had a reader of genius is, in this copy, in the hands of one of the youngest bibliophiles. I take the liberty, somewhat responsible for the book, to write here friendly compliments". It was Henri Mondor (1885-1962) who brought about the meeting between Valéry and Alain, "two of the sovereign minds of this first half-century" in his own words (NRF, September 1952). Enclosed: - ALAIN. Autograph letter signed to his dear Prince Junior [Henri Mondor], April 5, 1946 (one p. in-8; signed "Alain prince senior"). Beautiful friendly letter to his friend who has just been elected to the French Academy: "I do not have the taste, and I am fully delighted with what you like. I want to write it to you without delay so as not to be outdone by the Countess, the Duchess, the Duke, etc. This will give us a beautiful life of Valery, which you will know how to write and which you owe us. My dear Prince Junior, Monique [his companion and collaborator, who died in 1941] would be delighted, and it seems to me that her spirit in me congratulates you, dear immortal...". - VALÉRY, Mrs Paul, born Jeanne Gobillard. Autograph visiting card to Dr. Lemaire (with envelope containing a laurel leaf), thanking him for sending roses. - 5 miscellaneous cards (invitations for events in tribute to Paul Valéry), 1955-1972. Provenance: Doctor Jean-François Lemaire (consignment and bookplate). (G. Karaïskakis and F. Chapon. Bibliography of the works of Paul Valéry, n° 12G.)
