Campaign of Russia - RAVIN (Edme Louis Pierre).... - Lot 145 - Lynda Trouvé
Campaign of Russia - RAVIN (Edme Louis Pierre). Diary followed during the campaign of Moscow and in Russia, 1814. First part 1812. By E. L. P. Ravin, ex-health officer at the headquarters of the Army of Italy, Fourth Corps. 1814. sl, sd. Handwritten personal memoirs, 1 vol. in-8, 231-[1] pages with 9 original pen-and-ink drawings (costumes and uniforms), 8 of which out of text. Neat and legible writing in a filleted frame in brown ink. Scratches and erasures. Bound in half vellum with slipcase. Used binding. With several photocopies of old handwritten documents relating to the training and service of Ravin, born in 1793 in Seigneulay in the Yonne, surgeon sub-helper in the Army of Italy from January 9, 1812 to October 9, 1816 (including act of dismissal of November 16, 1817 with retroactive effect to October 9, 1816, and a request for reinstatement of December 8, 1816 after a captivity of four years in Russia). This diary, written after the fact, retraces the circumstances of these four years of captivity in Russia. After a foreword of 10 pp. explaining the interest of these memoirs as for the unpublished side of certain relations, Dr Ravin relates the departure of his corps towards Russia in February 1812 through Italy, Tyrol, Austria, Prussia, Poland etc. until Russia, by describing sometimes some exactions of the army within the crossed countries and scenes of combat. The story is very detailed on the different stages, the strategic movements and the feelings of the author (especially on the cold and hunger that seized him little by little and towards a young girl named Katia who followed the army). There follows a long description of his captivity during the retreat from Moscow in the winter of 1812, of the other French and foreign prisoners, of his stay under surveillance with peasants and with the intendant Kostryco. The manuscript ends at the end of 1812.
