All the images relate his journey as a military man, as a man very attached to the Annamese civilization and as an explorer of little explored territories. All the pictures were taken during the period 1888-1891 by Captain Trumelet-Faber, who was assigned in 1888 to a battalion of Annamite riflemen in Hué. In 1890, he was seconded to Hanoi and was appointed battalion commander. It was in this context that Auguste Pavie asked him to carry out a number of missions. He returned from Indochina with several albums of photographs, dating from 1888 to 1891. Upon his return to France, he became a brigadier general, was posted to Tunisia and Algeria and died during the First World War. The album is dedicated "To Mr. General de Divsion Bichot de l'Infanterie de Marine, Respectful homage of the author to his former General in Chief in Indo-China".
