[Middle East - RYCAUT (Paul). History of the present state of the Ottoman Empire, containing the political maxims of the Turks. Paris, Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1670. In-12, tan basane, smooth spine decorated (period binding). Lacking at the headpieces, spines cracked, corners dull. First French edition in-12, illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, an illustration in the text representing a turban, and 19 folding engraved plates. Light spotting in the lower margins. Rusty stains at the bottom of one page. A few small freckles. Plate 5 is torn with half missing. Paul Rycaut went to Constantinople in 1661 as secretary to the English ambassador there; he was appointed consul of Smyrna in 1667 where he lived for 7 years.
