Joseph Brugère (1841-1918), polytechnician, was a French general, his long and brilliant career, which began at the beginning of the Second Empire, ended at the end of the First World War. - A lieutenant-colonel in 1879, he joined the military household of the President of the Republic Jules Grévy, which did not prevent him from commanding the artillery of the French expeditionary corps in Tunisia in 1881. - He was appointed Military Governor of Paris in 1895, and the following year he became Vice President of the High Council of War, thus becoming Generalissimo of the French army. Transferred to the reserve in 1906, he asked to be reinstated at the beginning of the 1914 war, and commanded a territorial division at the front. He died on August 31, 1918. During his sixty-year career, he obtained all the ranks of the Legion of Honour, from knight in 1867 to grand-cross in 1904, and was also awarded the Military Medal in 1906, the highest distinction.
