Tran Van Tho (1917-XXth) School of Fine... - Lot 204 - Lynda Trouvé
Tran Van Tho (1917-XXth) School of Fine Arts of Indochina. The return of the laureate. Painting on silk signed lower left. Size : 60x80 cm (at sight). Period frame. As a young artist, Tran Van Tho perfected his skills at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine - without having graduated - and took part in exhibitions in Paris in 1941 and 1942. Back in Indochina, he settles in Saigon. He works mainly on silk painting, but he also practices as a master lacquerer after a stay in the workshops of Thu Dau Mot. From 1950 onwards, he collaborates in many events around the world, including the International Exhibition in Rome in 1950. Together with Lê Thy (1919-1961), he took part in the Mostra de Milano (Italy) in October 1956 in a retrospective organised by the Galleria dell'Ariete: "Le Lacche di Le Thy et Tran Van Tho (The Lacquers of Lê Thy and Tran Van Tho)". He is going to become very well known in Saigon as an artist, transcribing on silk all the great classic themes of Vietnamese popular culture and traditions. After the Fall of Saigon in 1975, he settled permanently in France.
