BALLY (Victor François), FRANÇOIS (André) & PARISET (Etienne - Lot 32
BALLY (Victor François), FRANÇOIS (André) & PARISET (Etienne). Medical history of yellow fever, observed in Spain and particularly in Catalonia, in the year 1821. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1823. In-8 paperback, waiting cover. With two folding plans at the end. Lég. mouill. claires in fine. E.A.S. from one of the authors, V. Bally, to Lieutenant General Saint-Cyr Nugues. Victor Bally (Beaurepaire d'Isère 1775-Salon 1866), was notably chief physician of the colony of Saint-Domingue, and thus an active witness of the epidemic of 1802 and 1803 which devoured the French army sent by Napoleon to suppress the revolt of Toussaint-Louverture; only a small number of survivors returned to France. The epidemic soon spread from the West Indies to the Iberian Peninsula and Bally was appointed in 1821 president of the commission charged with going to study the means of fighting the scourge and guaranteeing the border provinces. Accompanied by Doctors François (who had been under his orders in Santo Domingo), Pariset, Mazet and Rochoux, he went to Barcelona to visit the sick with yellow fever, despite the risk of contagion (which sadly overcame Mazet after only 2 days). After their return to France and their successive quarantines, their precious report was enthusiastically received by the government, the Academy and even the population, admiring their devotion. Stamp ex-libris of General d'Empire Saint-Cyr Nugues, known as "Cyr Nugues" (1774-1842). We add: AUDOUARD (Mathieu-François-Maxence), Historical and Medical Relation of Yellow Fever which reigned in Barcelona in 1821. Paris, Moreau, 1822. In-8 paperback, waiting cover. First ff. gnawed in the inferior margin. Main physician of the armies, the author had also been sent to Barcelona, apart from the above-mentioned commission, to study yellow fever there and establish its actual contagion.
