Scene of a charnel house in gilded and embossed copper. Elem - Lot 145
Scene of a charnel house in gilded and embossed copper. Element of mandorla which nimbed a wrathful deity, which lets imagine the important dimension of this one. The lower register features a lotus frieze, the upper one a halo of flames, and a succession of vajras. The main register features a mass grave scene, where a scavenging bird and two jackals devour corpses. The charnel house scenes, symbolizing impermanence, suffering and death, are traditionally used as a medium for meditation by renouncing ascetics. Tibet, 14th-15th century. Dimensions: 60x 26 cm.
