Tran Van Tho (1917-2004) School of Fine Arts of Indochina. Crossing the bridge under the storm. Painting on silk framed and signed lower right. Stamp of the artist. Size: 32x46 cm (at sight). (Rocket silk, holes and spots). As a young artist, Tran Van Tho studied at the Indochina School of Fine Arts - without having graduated - and took part in exhibitions in Paris in 1941. In Hanoi, he mainly works on silk painting, but he also practices as a master lacquerer after a stint in the workshops of Thu Dau Mot. From 1950 onwards, he collaborated in many events around the world, including the International Exhibition in Rome in 1950. Together with Lê Thy (1919-1961), he took part in the Mostra de Milano (Italy) in October 1956 in a retrospective organised by the Galleria dell'Ariete: "Le Lacche di Le Thy et Tran Van Tho (The Lacquers of Lê Thy and Tran Van Tho)". Settled in Saigon in 1954, he became famous for his artistic work in transcribing on silk all the great classic themes of popular culture and traditions of Vietnam. After the Fall of Saigon, he settled permanently in France - in Salon de Provence - from 1981 until his death in 2004.
