Nguyen Tu Nghiem (1922-2016) School of Fine Arts of Indochina (1944-1945) Ho Chi Minh Prize for Fine Arts in 1996 The horseman. Gouache on framed cardboard. Preparatory study. Sight dimensions: 38x53 cm. Provenance: Collection Thi Nguyen Sanh, colonel of the French army in Indochina. Swedish collection. Transmitted by descent to the present owner. These works come from the private collection of Thi Nguyen Sanh, former colonel for the French army in Indochina. Dismissed in 1954, Thi Nguyen Sanh became a local journalist in Hanoi. It was at this time that he met "The Four Pillars", a group of artists including : Nguyen Tu Nghiem, Bui Xuan Phai, Nguyen Sang and Duong Bich Lien, the five of them formed a friendship that lasted for many years. A fervent activist of Vietnamese arts, Thi Nguyen Sanh bought hundreds of works from his artist friends in their studios - Nang Hien, Tran Luu Hau or Pham van don, but also Bui Xuan Phai, of whom he was one of his closest confidants.
