Surgery box with two compartments sheathed in leather and gr - Lot 121
Surgery box with two compartments sheathed in leather and green velvet, with handle and bronze elements, stamped F. Charriere "at the back of the courtyard St John Lateran No. 34 and 35 (...) opposite the College of France". The box contains two amputation saws (small and large), two pliers, a large knife, four small knives (often lost), a screw tourniquet and miscellaneous, all with an ebony handle. All accessories are signed Charriere in Paris and some are stamped with a vase surrounded by snakes. The box we present is a testimony of the first sets produced by the House Charriere between 1821 and 1833. The key of the lock is missing. Height : 8 cm. Length : 44,5 cm. Depth: 14 cm (case). Joseph Fréderic Charrière (1803-1876) was born in Switzerland on March 20, 1803. In 1816 he entered an apprenticeship with Vincent, a cutler. At that time, Charriere met Guyot who will become his workshop manager thereafter. Noticed for his work, Charriere became master in 1821 and set up his own business in the premises of Vincent who died shortly before. Charriere remained at this address of the courtyard St Jean de Latran until 1833 when he moved to rue de l'Ecole de Médecine (7, 9, then 6 in 1842). In 1852, Charriere cedes his business to his son Jules and then to Collin in 1866. Frederic Charriere died in 1876 in Paris. The reputation of the House Charriere was rebuilt by many awards and medals including at the World Fairs. It was probably the first craftsman to industrialize the production of surgical instruments and was the supplier of the Navy.
