1869-1872. Important folio album of a Chinese... - Lot 13 - Lynda Trouvé
1869-1872. Important folio album of a Chinese silk broker drawn up between 1869 and 1872, partially handwritten and including 363 labels and samples of his main suppliers coming from the South of China, in the province of Zhejang, in particular WAN FENG specialized in the work of silk whose label is recognizable with its evanescent gilded lion, but also DE MAO HANG famous trader with the emblem of the double stag. This album was used for accounting purposes and allowed its owner to keep an inventory of his stocks and orders. It shows a rich palette of merchant labels from different silk and textile traders in the late 19th century and justifies the golden age of the silk route. A majority of the labels are written in Chinese, but also in English and are illustrated with different stamps as well as fantastic, auspicious and legendary animals (phoenix, chilong, carp, qilings, phoenix, ...). These labels were generally affixed to the fabric lais to indicate their origin. The texts, sometimes richly illustrated, were also used to prevent possible frauds and counterfeits. (Binding damaged, yellow stains, and pilings).
