ANDRÉ DELACROIX (1878-1934). - Lot 113
ANDRÉ DELACROIX (1878-1934). Algiers School of Fine Arts, circa 1899. Angkor Wat at dusk. Oil on canvas titled Cour intérieure du temple d'Angkor Vat, signed and dated on the reverse on the canvas and stretcher March 16 and 17, 1916. Dimensions: 61x37.5 cm. (Damage, missing parts and restorations). After numerous journeys throughout the colonial empire, André Delacroix spent a long time in Tonkin and Cambodia, during which time he produced a number of vigorously critically acclaimed works. Between 1911 and 1913, he exhibited regularly at the annual Hanoi Salon, receiving an honorary distinction from H.M. the Emperor of Annam Duy Tân. Celebrated in particular for his works dedicated to the temples of Angkor, these are nevertheless rare on the market. Indeed, much of his work in Pnom Penh was destroyed when the Magellan was torpedoed in 1917. This 1916 work is therefore a rare testimony to the artist's production in Cambodia.
