ANONYMOUS, ca. 1885. - Lot 75
ANONYMOUS, ca. 1885. The taking of Sontay. Important gouache and ink on framed cotton depicting a battle (probably the capture of Sontay, one of the three famous battles of the conquest of Tonkin) between the French army commanded by Admiral Courbet and the imperial Qing army supported by the Black Flags during the Franco-Chinese War of 1883-1885. Made in the tradition of Vietnamese popular imagery, this painting is similar to those in the Musée de l'Armée in Paris. Indochina, last quarter of the 19th century. Dimensions: 122x76 cm (at sight). (Good condition. Some fading).
