PAUL DUCUING (1867-1949). - Lot 87
PAUL DUCUING (1867-1949). Portrait of H.M. Sisowath Monivong, king of Cambodia. Bronze bust with golden patina, titled "S.M. Sisowath Monivong, king of Cambodia" in relief and signed on the right side by the artist. Stamp in hollow at the back of the foundry "Lamy - cire perdue". Indochina, 1922-1924. Height: 29 cm. Presented for the first time at auction, this rare example is typical of the work of Paul Ducuing and more generally of the statuary of the colonial period. Sculptor graduated from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and official artist under the IIIrd Republic, he was also close to Albert Sarraut, Governor of Indochina. Then director of cookie works at the Manufacture de Sèvres, a position he held until 1927, the artist, who enjoyed the Governor's support, was sent on a mission to Indochina from December 1921 to December 1924 to fulfill several important official commissions. Thus, in 1921, he was commissioned by the government to produce the bust of H.M. Emperor Khai Dinh, a gift that accompanied the young prince Vinh Tuy during his stay in France, as well as the bust of the king of Cambodia, in royal costume and in the European style, as shown in this example. The lost wax casting was made by the Lamy foundry from a plaster proof as for the bust of Khai Dinh made in the same year, a copy of which is still preserved today at the Musée du Quai Branly.
