DINH VAN LICH (1916 - ?) - Lot 233
DINH VAN LICH (1916 - ?) School of Fine Arts of Indochina - Lacquer section. View of a village in Tonkin. Polychrome and gold lacquered wood panel depicting a village bordered by banana trees, palm trees and bamboo. Signed and dated lower right 57. Dimensions: 55x37 cm. (Cracks on the back of the panel). Expert: Etienne Leterrier. Himself the son of a well-known painter, Dinh Van Lich belongs to a family of lacquerers who contributed to the development of the art of lacquerware in the specialized village of Ha Thái, between 1937 and 1954. He is indeed the younger brother of lacquerers Dinh Van Dàn and Dinh Van Thành. The latter's particular links with the Indochina School of Fine Arts are well known, since Dinh Van Thành played a leading role in the rediscovery and teaching of lacquer as an artistic medium, alongside Joseph Inguimberty. He traveled to Paris for the 1937 colonial exhibition. A leading lacquer artist, Dinh Van Lich most likely worked alongside the best artists of the Indochina School of Fine Arts such as Pham Hau. His personal production, signed with his name and sometimes with his stamp, dates essentially from the early 1950s. It was undoubtedly produced in the family workshops in Hanoi or around Ha Thái, his native village which is still today the specialized village of lacquer craftsmen.
