Indra's visit to the Indrasala cave. Ancient Gandhara region - Lot 146
Indra's visit to the Indrasala cave. Ancient Gandhara region, Pakistan, Grey Schist. Rare episode depicting the king of the gods' visit to the Buddha meditating in a cave at Indrasala. Indra shows his devotion to the Buddha by performing the Anjali mudra gesture, resting on one knee. A servant shelters him under a parasol. He is also accompanied by the harpist Pancasikha, who holds his instrument in his left hand. The Buddha is seated in a cave, his body entirely covered by his pleated robe. A lion's head appears nestled in the rock on which the Buddha is seated. Despite the lacks, accidents, concretions and erosions, the scene is treated in a dynamic manner and retains its freshness. Dimensions: 16x34 cm. Provenance: Hôtel Drouot, Tessier-Sarrou, December 14, 2020, lot 51.
