Taoist painting,
Ink and color on silk depicting a group of ten male Taoist deities standing in pink and yellow clouds on a blue background, each haloed and holding a tablet with both hands, their ample robes richly decorated with motifs, sometimes gilded, of dragons, cranes, trigrams or clouds, the gilded title in a vertical red cartouche at top right giving their names: Shifang Lingbao Tianzun, the Heavenly Venerables of the Precious Jewel and the Ten Directions.
China, Qing dynasty (1644-1911), 19th century.
Dimensions: 104.5x219.5 cm (painting only).

This painting probably belonged to a set of religious paintings for a temple, showing other groups of important figures from the vast Taoist pantheon. Also known as Shifang Jiuku Tianzun, the deities depicted here save people from suffering (in all ten directions).
