PAN SHIXUN (born 1934). - Lot 191
PAN SHIXUN (born 1934). Woman and child in the mountains of Tibet. Framed oil on canvas signed lower left in two characters and dated 1985. Dimensions: 59.5x73.5 cm. A famous Chinese painter, Pan Shixun entered the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1955. After graduating from Wu Zaoren's studio in 1960, he went on to become one of the most important realist painters of his time. Representing everyday life, his painting is that of a man steeped in the artistic culture of New China, imbued with a certain idealism in the depiction of popular subjects. The artist traveled a dozen times to Tibet and the Qinghai region. These travels gave rise to a number of oil paintings, his specialty, tirelessly depicting mountain vistas and the peasants, horsemen and herds of these remote areas. In 2019, a retrospective of his works will be held to highlight the artist's important contribution to the development of the oil-on-canvas technique and, more generally, to the realist movement in China.
