Wooden netsuke representing a Tengu no tamago, Japan, 19th century The head (as well as a claw and a wing) of the tengu emerging from the egg, bearing a black wood inlay depicting the headdress of the yamabushi (ascetic mountain monks), the eyes inlaid with ivory, the egg incised with feathers. Length: 3.8 cm. Width: 3.1 cm. (Chip and restoration to beak).
