KANAYA GOROSABURO IX (1836-1890).
Pair of bronze vases with mottled brown patina, decorated with a dragon coiled around the neck holding a golden peach of longevity in its claws, the eyes and whiskers enhanced with gold.
Signed under the base "Dai nippon meiji nen sei kudai Kanaya Gorosaburo (9th generation)".

Kanaya Gorosaburo IX came from an important family of bronzemakers established in Tokyo as early as 1581. Renowned for the finesse of his work, he took part in the World's Fairs in Vienna in 1873, Philadelphia in 1876 and Paris in 1878. The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and the Museum of Art in Philadelphia preserve examples of the firm's work, which is still in use today.
