REIGN OF S.M. EMPEROR MINH MANG (1820-1840).

The two fantastical animals move through the clouds. The handle and beak are elegantly curved. The silver lid is finely chased with a dragon chasing the sacred pearl.
Vietnam, 19th century, made by the imperial workshops in Hué for the palace (Phap Lam Ty Tuong Cuc).
Mark under the base with four Minh Mang Nien Tao characters, i.e. "made under the reign of Minh Mang".
Height: 20 cm.
(Lid formerly attached, missing).
This design, combining a five-clawed dragon and a phoenix known as "Long Phung", is commonly associated with the imperial couple.
