REIGN OF S.M. EMPEROR THIEU TRI (1840-1847).
Imperial offering cup on pedestal in "phap lam" enamels on copper with blue background. The central part decorated with a Tho symbol of longevity in the form of a medallion encircled by five bats (five happinesses), the rim richly decorated in polychrome enamels with peaches of longevity, persimmons, lotuses and blossoming flowers. The foot is openwork, the flared base encircled by a frieze of gilded motifs.
Mark with two sigillary characters on a white background under the base.
Vietnam, Hué imperial palace workshops, 19th century, late Minh Mang - early Thieu Tri period.
Height: 14 cm. Diameter: 30 cm.

This pedestal bowl, once used for devotional purposes and the presentation of offerings, is decorated in a manner typical of Imperial Court production of the period. The iconography combining bats, tho symbol and flowers is traditionally intended for the Empress or Queen Mother. Few examples of such decoration survive today.
