Preserved in a fine gilded wood frame with crimson passepartout and fluted decoration. Bears a German store stamp (J. P. Schneider JR in Frankfurt) and a collection label 2491 on the back of the panel, and a German store label on the back of the frame. Dimensions : 19x47.5 cm (when viewed). Total dimensions : 47x75 cm. (Good condition). History: Wilhelm Beer studied at the Städel Art Institute, where he became professor in 1897. In 1857, he visited Munich and the Alps, then Vienna. His repeated trips to Russia, however, attracted critical attention. During longer stays in the Smolensk governorate in 1867-1870 and in 1877 (especially at the estate of the painter Sergei Andreyevich von Baryschnikov), Beer studied in detail the characteristics of the country and its people. His penchant for depicting scenes of Russian folk life earned him the nickname "Beer the Russian".
