In the 19th century, as the ideas of 18th-century philosophers such as Voltaire and Rousseau spread, a large number of statuettes bearing their effigies were produced in a variety of materials. Workshops in Dieppe and the Jura, such as that of the Rosset family, produced ivory statuettes of Jean-Jacques Rousseau based on a model by sculptor François-Marie Suzanne.
