Pan Yuliang 潘玉良 (1895-1977). Calligraphy by Yang Manhua 楊縵華 (1908-1984). Leaning female nude, circa 1930-40. Ink on paper. Framed. Signed Yuliang 玉良, lower right. Two Yang Manhua seals: first seal: Yang 楊, second seal: Manhua縵華. "Among calligraphic styles, the most difficult to master is Tiexian Zhuan, a wire seal style* because it must combine strength and suppleness. The power of the brush must be round and vigorous to achieve excellence. Master Yuliang uses the center-of-the-brush technique to draw nude sketches, a further testament to his skill. Admirable, simply admirable!" Yang Manhua. 書法以鐵線篆最難,須剛柔共濟,筆力圓勁,方臻上乘,玉良先生用中鋒作人體素描 尤見工力,佩甚佩甚,楊縵華 *Pan Yuliang created a style called "Yuliang wire" and used a seal bearing this term. Yang Manhua was a calligrapher and like Pan Yuliang was a member of the Chinese Artists Association, founded in 1934 in Shanghai. Size: 44.5x25.5 cm. Provenance: Lombrail-Teucquam sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris. November 28, 2007, lot 105.
