Wooden base lacquered in takamaki-e and maki-e gold and silv - Lot 378
Wooden base lacquered in takamaki-e and maki-e gold and silver on a black background, decorated with a three-clawed dragon in clouds facing a tiger. The border is decorated with latticework and flowers, the legs are curved and the entablature is openwork. A common theme in Japanese iconography, the representation of these two creatures is a reference to the story of the hermit, the dragon and the tiger, which recognizes a complementary duality between the dragon, king of the heavens and of scaly creatures, and the tiger, embodiment of brute force and courage and presiding over earthly creatures. Japan, 19th century. Height: 12.5 cm. Length: 31 cm. (Restorations, cracks).
