1885 - Lot 7
1885 MARINE AND COLONIES. Port of Saïgon. Plans and working drawings. Proposed and implemented by Mr. H. Hersent, civil engineer, contractor. 1885. Large Portfolio complete with its 17 plates (folds). Dimensions: 71x56 cm. (Accidents, missing parts). President of the Société des Ingénieurs Civils de France in 1886, Hildevert Hersent (1827-1903) promoted the use of compressed-air caissons for underwater foundations. He had already distinguished himself in the late 1850s with the foundations of the Kehl bridge over the Rhine. It is to this famous contractor, who revolutionized the construction of underwater foundations, that the government has turned for the renovation of the Port of Saigon, strategic in the conquest of Indochina.
