An Annamite mandarin's ceremonial saber known as a guom, the scabbard decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays of pampers, flowering branches, gourds and butterflies, set off by 800°/°°° chased and embossed silver appliques adorned with dragons and flowering foliage. The mammoth ivory handle terminates in a chimera-headed tip holding in its mouth the curved hilt adorned with foliage transforming into a taotie mask. Indochina, late 19th century. Length: 82 cm. Gross weight: 1162.2 g. (Lacks, cracks, tip of scabbard modified).
