PAUL JOUVE (1878-1973). ELEPHANT CAPARAÇONNE ET SON MAHOUT. Framed oil on board, signed lower left. Circa 1923. Moulded exotic wood frame. Dimensions: 53x37.5 cm. Provenance: Paris private collection. Winner of a travel grant from the Indochina government, Paul Jouve embarked from Marseille in late summer 1922 for a long journey to the Far East. He spent nearly three months in Angkor, from where he brought back numerous studies that were used to illustrate Pierre Loti's Le Pellerin d'Angkor.
