Evariste JONCHERE (1892-1956). - Lot 107
Evariste JONCHERE (1892-1956). 1st Grand Prix de Rome, 1925. Indochina Prize, 1932. Director of the Ecole supérieure des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine. Meo Warrior. Bronze, brown patina, signed on the terrace. Foundry stamp Susse frères. Undated. Height: 57 cm. Provenance: Former collection of Mme E. Jonchère Debiol. French private collection. The Meo warrior, camped proudly in a contra posto attitude, his tunic carefully rendered by the modeling, is a counterpart to the Meo woman. Between 1938 and 1946, Jonchère produced several subjects of women and men from the provinces of Indochina, of fairly similar dimensions: the Moï woman and the offering bearer, two works that have now disappeared. Bibliography: Roger Gain. Evariste Jonchère. Guerrier Meo reproduced on page 94. The original plaster model was destroyed during lost-wax casting by the Susse brothers.
