Set of two ivory brush pots with red and gold lacquered decoration featuring the "Deng Longmen" or "Crossing the Dragon Gate" theme from the myth of the Jade Emperor. The rim is decorated with a lake filled with animals, including the three carp from the myth, about to enter the gate under the gaze of a dragon flying overhead in the clouds. The entrance entablature is decorated with four characters 化禹門龍. This type of decoration was frequently associated with the values of courage and determination, and referred to a successful career or exam success. Vietnam, 19th century. Height: 10.1 and 9.9 cm.
