MORELLY (Étienne Gabriel). Essay on the human mind or natura - Lot 2
MORELLY (Étienne Gabriel). Essay on the human mind or natural principles of education. Paris, Delespine, 1743.
In-12, [26]-369-[1] pp, marbled tan calf, ornate ribbed spine, title page, red edges (period binding).
(Covers worn, some minor rubbing).
First edition of Morelly's first work, said to have inspired Rousseau. In this treatise on education, Morelly aims to show that the child is sensitive before he is reasonable: "I write for man and I take him from his infancy: I observe the movements of his mind and the progress of his knowledge; and as he is sensitive before he is reasonable, it is by spying on his sensations that I seek to discover the first steps that reason makes him take". A good copy.
