Comment : Hwan-Gi Kim (1913-1974) was a Korean painter who pioneered abstract art in Korea. Trained at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in the 1930s, he was initially drawn to the figurative style before turning to abstraction. In 1948, he founded the "Hangeul" artists' collective, a group that advocated a break with the artistic activity of the colonial period.
