A student of Jean-Léon GEROME (1824-1904) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and of Jean-Paul LAURENS (1838-1921), Brouillet entered the Salon in 1879, as a specialist in group portraits and society portraits of the Belle Époque, with his fine, studied brushwork. He is also the author of "Une leçon clinique à la Salpêtrière", painted in 1887 and deposited in the Musée d'histoire de la Médecine by the Centre Pompidou.
