Vessantara Jataka, tempera on canvas. The last incarnation o - Lot 244
Vessantara Jataka, tempera on canvas. The last incarnation of the Buddha before Siddharta Gautama, it tells the story of Prince Vessantara, who renounces everything, even giving up his wife and children. The episode painted here is probably the end of the story, where the prince returns to his city after exile and long adventures, and is triumphantly welcomed. His generosity is celebrated as a great Buddhist virtue. Burma, Myanmar, 20th century. Dimensions: 75x92 cm (as seen). (Holes, accidents, folds). Expert: R.M.
