Seated Buddha. Copper alloy, lacquered and gilded. Seated in - Lot 254
Seated Buddha. Copper alloy, lacquered and gilded. Seated in a half-lotus position, the right hand makes the gesture of taking the earth as a witness, while the left is placed in the lap. He wears monastic robes, leaving his right shoulder uncovered. The full cast, particularly large ears and pyramidal hairline, including the ushnisha, remind us of several pieces in the Griswold collection dating from the Dvaravati period. See H.W. Woodward, Jr. The Sacred Sculpture of Thailand, the Alexander B. Giswold collection. The Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore. P53 Fig.45, P57 Fig 51, P70 Fig 68. Thailand, Dvaravati period, circa 10th century. Height: 12.7 cm. Expert: R.M.
