School from the first half of the 19th century. - Lot 268
School from the first half of the 19th century. Animated view of the Whampoa pagoda bordered by the Pearl River. Rectangular oil on canvas with oval view. Dimensions: 59.5x46 cm. (Old restorations, canvas split on the right in the height). The subject of our painting can be compared with a gouache on paper dating from the first half of the 19th century and kept at the Musée Dobrée in Nantes under inventory number 2002.14.24. In this Chinese version, the Pearl River with two sampans, but no figures, flows to the left of the nine-storey Whampoa pagoda, also known as Huangpu. This is Canton's outer harbour, whose navigable route from Macao is punctuated by tiered towers built on spurs, called ta-Tzeu, which serve as landmarks for sailors.
