SHA QI, known as Sadji (1914 - 2005). Study of an antique vase. Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard. Signed, dated "Spring 1938" and located in Brussels in Chinese characters (沙耆三十八年春作于比京). Dimensions: 50x40 cm (at sight). (Some alterations to the pictorial layer). Sha Qi is a contemporary Chinese painter renowned for his works combining tradition and modernity. Having received a solid artistic training at the art schools of Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou, he left to pursue his studies at the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Belgique in Brussels in 1937, on the advice of his mentor, the famous painter Beihong XU (1895-1953). There, he became a pupil of Alfred BASTIEN (1873-1955), from whom he inherited a style imbued with both impressionism and naturalism. Thanks to his versatile mastery of painting, drawing and sculpture, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Academy at the end of his studies in 1938. From 1940 onwards, he held several solo and group exhibitions. His work "Jeune femme à la flûte" entered the collections of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium following an exhibition at the Petit Palais.
