Gaston ROULLET (1847-1925). - Lot 94
Gaston ROULLET (1847-1925). Official Navy painter in Annam and Tonkin. Hanoi - The Red River. Oil on framed canvas board, located HANOI - TONKIN and dated 1XX5 (1885) lower left. Dimensions: 24x35 cm. (Some annotations in pencil in the sky). Gaston Roullet once again presents us with a lovely, lively landing scene, a mix of traditional junks and steamships inviting us to travel. He was the first official Navy painter to visit Tonkin and Annam, staying only a few months between 1885 and 1886 to produce over 220 works. Most of these works were shown at an exhibition in Toulon after his return at the end of 1886. On this occasion, he published a small monograph (Un artiste au Tonkin et en Annam) in which he describes the conditions of his stay in Indochina. The booklet also contains a detailed inventory of his exhibited works (10 large paintings, 62 small paintings, 50 watercolors and some 60 drawings).
