Gustave SURAND (1860-1937) Blandine ou la martyre aux lions. Pencil and pastel on blue paper, signed lower left with a dedication "À Mademoiselle Henriette Lux. Souvenir affectueux". Size: 47.5x31 cm (as seen). A draughtsman, painter and sculptor trained by Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921) at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris, Gustave Surand specialized in depicting large Fauves from life studies. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1881, and was named Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur in 1909. His studio collection was sold at Hôtel Drouot on February 28, 1973. Our pastel can be compared with another drawing by Gustave Surand depicting the same subject, with a variation in the attitude of the model's head, in the Millon & Associés sale, Neuilly-sur-Marne, April 20, 2022, lot no. 96.
