Set of two medals consisting of: - 1922 Bronze medal commemorating the opening of the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute and the International Meeting of the Red Cross Societies of the Eastern Countries, held in Bangkok in December 2465 of the Buddhist Era (1922). On the obverse, the upper portion features the royal monogram “สผ,” inscribed within a circle. To the left is a microscope, a symbol of scientific research, while to the right is a cobra raising its hood, a reference to research on venoms and antivenom serums. Engraved in the lower portion is the inscription: “Commemoration of the opening of the Saovabha Institute.” The reverse depicts Garuda, with outstretched wings, bearing the Red Cross emblem. The inscription “สุขวิทยา” (“hygiene” or “public health”) also appears there. Around the edge is inscribed: “Meeting of the Red Cross Societies of the East, Bangkok, December: Year 2465 [Buddhist Era] .” The Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute played a major role in the development of modern medicine in Thailand, particularly through its work on vaccines and antivenom serums. It is named in honor of Her Majesty Queen Sri Bajarindra, wife of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and mother of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), whose efforts contributed to the development of the country’s medical and humanitarian institutions. Following her funeral, King Vajiravudh donated his personal assets to the Siamese Red Cross to fund the construction of this institute. It was designed as a memorial dedicated to the memory of his mother, much like Chulalongkorn Hospital, which had previously been built in honor of his father, King Chulalongkorn. Diameter: 7.4 cm. Weight: 213.6 g. (Signs of wear, scratches). - 2000 Bronze medal commemorating the centennial of the French School of the Far East. The obverse bears the School’s monogram, its name, and the dates 1900 and 2000. The reverse depicts a paulownia tree surrounded by the names of countries in the Far East: “India—Thailand—Laos—Cambodia—Malaysia—Indonesia—Vietnam—Korea—Japan.” Minted by the Monnaie de Paris. Both sides bear the signature of engraver Claude Emmel. Diameter: 6.8 cm. Weight: 175.8 g.
