Jean BOUCHAUD (1891–1977). - Lot 131
Jean BOUCHAUD (1891–1977). Indochina Prize, 1924. The Bathers. Circa 1925. Framed oil on canvas, signed lower right. Dimensions: 100x95 cm. “I dreamed of visiting Laos, the ‘Earthly Paradise.’” Jean Bouchaud spent two months in Laos in January and February 1925. During his stay, he focused primarily on capturing human types and traditional gestures—especially those of women, his favorite subject—such as the woman here combing her hair or leaning over the river to wash her clothes. The landscape is rarely the main subject but serves as a backdrop to the human activity that he captures so wonderfully well. Bibliography: *Carnets du Viêt Nam*, “Jean Bouchaud: A Painter in Indochina—1924–1925,” special issue, 2010. Reproduced on page 42.
