VICTOR TARDIEU (1870–1937). - Lot 136
VICTOR TARDIEU (1870–1937). Director of the Indochina School of Fine Arts from 1925 to 1937. Lyon School of Fine Arts, Indochina Prize in 1920. Camp scene by a river. Circa 1914. Framed oil on panel, unsigned. Dimensions: 13.8 x 18 cm. Provenance: Lucien and Denise Scheler. Lucien Scheler, who moved in artistic circles in Montparnasse in the 1920s, was a friend of Jean Tardieu, from whom he is said to have received this small panel. Passed down through the family. During World War I, Tardieu created a series of small panels for the Duchess of Sutherland, who had established a field hospital. The artist donated a number of these panels to her; they are now on display at the Florence Nightingale Museum in London. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Alix Turolla-Tardieu, the artist’s heir, for the precise biographical details she was able to provide.
