Joseph INGUIMBERTY (1896–1971) - Lot 137
Joseph INGUIMBERTY (1896–1971) Professor of decorative arts at the Indochina School of Fine Arts. Gathering Under the Trees. Framed oil on canvas, signed lower left. Circa 1930. Dimensions: 110x140 cm. The theme of ponds in the Tonkin Delta serves as the backdrop for several paintings exhibited at the Galerie Charpentier, which the critic and geographer Pierre Gourou highlighted in his article in *Le Monde colonial illustré* in January 1937. The ponds are like splashes of color that shift with the sky, ranging from muddy brown to soft yellow—a backdrop designed to highlight the models who posed for Inguimberty. In his article, Pierre Gourou also emphasizes the care—even the love—with which the painter observes the people and objects he chooses to depict. It is this gentleness that continues to captivate us. Bibliography: Giulia Pentcheff. Joseph Inguimberty. First Catalog of Paintings. A preparatory study for our painting is reproduced on page 117 under number 52.
