A blue-and-white porcelain bowl known as “Hue blue,” decorat - Lot 208
A blue-and-white porcelain bowl known as “Hue blue,” decorated with a scene depicting King Gia Long’s flight (“Gia Long tẩu quốc”), accompanied by a poem written in Nôm script. Edged with metal. Two-character mark in blue, applied under the glaze on the base: “Ngoan Ngoc,” meaning “jade jewel.” Made in China for Vietnam, 19th century. Diameter: 13 cm. (Chip, small crack, and pitting.) (Pitting and restorations beneath the rim.) This rare design tells the legendary story of King Gia Long’s flight: “Gia Long tẩu quốc” (translated as “Gia Long in Search of the Restoration of His Kingdom”). In exile for 28 years, the king traveled through the south in pursuit of the unification of Vietnam and the founding of the Nguyễn dynasty. In this scene, a figure (the king) lying on the ground holds a parasol, while another figure prepares to come to his rescue in a boat, from a small islet featuring a house (a symbol of protection and a place of worship) and a weeping willow (an allusion to the hermit, the sage). This is a rare motif, given the general reluctance to depict the emperor in a state of flight. Dish decorated with the scene of King Gia Long’s escape (“Gia Long tẩu quốc”), depicting the king holding a parasol while another figure approaches by boat to rescue him from a small island featuring a house and a weeping willow. Marked “Ngoạn Ngọc.” Also included: - A blue-and-white porcelain cup known as “Hue blue,” decorated with a scene depicting the episode of King Gia Long’s escape (“Gia Long tẩu quốc”). Two-character mark in blue underglaze on the base: “Ngoan Ngoc,” meaning “jade jewel.” Made in China for Vietnam, first half of the 19th century. Diameter: 15.8 cm. (Chips and pitting). High-sided dish decorated with the scene of King Gia Long’s escape (“Gia Long tẩu quốc”). Marked “Ngoạn Ngọc”.
