A blue-and-white porcelain dish known as “Hue blue,” depicti - Lot 213
A blue-and-white porcelain dish known as “Hue blue,” depicting King Gia Long’s flight from the country (“Gia Long tẩu quốc”), accompanied by a calligraphic poem. Two-character mark in blue underglaze on the base, “Ngoan Ngoc” (meaning “jade jewel”), and an incised collector’s mark. Made in China for Vietnam, first half of the 19th century. Diameter: 18.2 cm. (Chip, small crack, and pitting). This rare design tells the legendary story of King Gia Long’s flight: “Gia Long tẩu quốc” (translated as “Gia Long in search of the restoration of his kingdom”). In exile for 28 years, the king traveled through the south in pursuit of Vietnam’s unification and the founding of the Nguyễn dynasty. In this design, a figure (the king) lying on the ground holds a parasol, while another figure prepares to come to his rescue in a boat, from a small islet featuring a house (a symbol of protection and a place of worship) and a weeping willow (an allusion to the hermit, the sage). This is a rare motif, given the general reluctance to depict the emperor in a state of flight. Small dish decorated with the scene of King Gia Long’s escape (“Gia Long tẩu quốc”), depicting the king lying on the ground holding a parasol, while another figure approaches by boat to rescue him from a small islet with a house and a weeping willow. Marked “Ngoạn Ngọc.”
